What do I need to know about transitioning to the new 23andMe?

The new 23andMe experience is a redesigned site with better functionality – including new exciting features. We will begin rolling out the new site experience to customers soon, and you’ll receive an email when your account has been transitioned and you have to access to the new features.

If you currently have access to health-related and traits reports, you will receive an email with important instructions prior to the transition of your account.

The New 23andMe Experience

The new 23andMe experience is a simplification of the current experience and features. There are a number of tools that have been consolidated or renamed, while others include new functionality. Some outdated or underused features have been discontinued.

Summary of Updates

  • The DNA Relatives feature has increased the number of matches that can be displayed to 2,000.
  • The DNA Relatives feature has new privacy settings and has an option to share select information with your DNA Relatives matches without a 1:1 sharing connection.
  • The Ancestry Composition feature has a new section called Ancestry Timeline. The Chromosome View section has been renamed to Chromosome Painting. Ancestry Timeline and Chromosome Painting are both accessible through the Ancestry Composition report.
  • Paternal assignments for Paternal Haplogroup have been updated. Paternal haplogroup assignments now include the name of the major branch and the name of a representative genetic marker. For example, if we previously reported a haplogroup as “Q1a3a,” we now report it as “Q-M3,” indicating that the Y-chromosome lineage belongs to a subgroup of haplogroup Q that bears the M3 marker.
  • Linking a paternal haplogroup assignment is not currently available. If you previously linked a paternal haplogroup, the haplogroup will not show in your Haplogroups report or in the DNA Relatives feature.
  • Some outdated or underused features have been discontinued. These features include: DNA Melody, Haplogroup Tree Mutation Mapper, Global Similarity, Profile SmartSearch, Family Inheritance Genome View, and if applicable to your account, Inheritance Calculator, ABO Blood Lab, and Reynold's Risk Score Lab.

Information About Existing Health-related and Traits Reports
Important: The following information only applies to a subset of customers who purchased prior to November 22, 2013 and currently have access to 23andMe health-related reports.

Current health-related reports - Health Risks, Inherited Conditions, Drug Response, and Traits - will be archived in the form of printable, PDF reports. This archive will be accessible in the new experience and customers will continue to be able to view these reports through the archive link. Your Reports Archive will only include the health reports for your profile – people with whom you are sharing results will not be included in your Reports Archive.

To prepare your account for transition, you may need to verify the following:

  • The ethnicity selected for your profile is correct. Your reports are personalized based on your self-reported ethnicity, so you’ll want to make sure your reports reflect your ethnicity correctly. Learn more.
  • You’ve opted-in to health reports. If you want your health reports to be archived, please ensure the box next to “I want to waive access to my Health reports” in your account settings is NOT checked. If you do not want to have your health reports archived, you do not need to opt-in. Learn more.
  • Unlock any locked reports you would like to view. Locked reports vary by genotyping chip and can include Parkinson's Disease, BRCA Mutations, Alzheimer's Disease, and TTR-Related Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy. If you have already unlocked these reports (i.e. you have seen your results), you don’t need to take any further action. Learn more. 

 

Health Results Options

Do I need to opt-in to locked reports in order for the reports to be included in my Reports Archive?

Yes, you will need to opt in to the locked reports in order for them to be included in your Reports Archive. If you do not opt in to viewing these reports before your archive is generated, you will not have the ability to opt in to them at a later date, and they will not appear in your archived reports.

Locked reports vary by genotyping chip and may include:

Any locked Health Risks reports or locked Inherited Conditions reports will be listed under the Locked Reports title at the top of each category page. If you do not see any locked reports listed on these pages, then you have opted in to and unlocked all locked reports available to you; there is no further action you need to take.

To opt in to a locked report, click the name of the report and read general information about the condition. The report will tell you how to make your results visible. Once you have opted in to the report, it will shuffle itself, alphabetically, within the appropriate list. Note that once you opted in and unlocked a locked report, it cannot be re-locked.

 

I have waived access to health results, what should I consider?

Once 23andMe has begun generating your Reports Archive, you will not be able to modify your profile settings. This means that if your settings are configured to waive access to your health results, a Reports Archive will not be generated for your profile and you will have permanently waived access to the health results previously offered by 23andMe.

Setting or Confirming Your Ethnicity

Why do I need to set or confirm my ethnicity?

Associations between genotype and phenotype often apply only to people of a particular ethnic background. This may be due to genetic differences between populations, or to environmental differences such as culture or geographic location. Telling us about your ethnicity is important because certain variants are more common in certain ethnicities. Many reports explain your results in the context of your ethnicity. In order to provide you with tailored information in your health results, this information is required.

 

I’m not sure which ethnicity to choose?

You can view and edit your profile’s ethnicity here. Select the option that best represents how you identify your own ancestry or ethnicity - similar to what you would enter on a census. If you think that your ancestors came from two or more regions, please select the "Multiple ancestries" option. If you aren't sure, select your best guess or "I'm not sure."

 

New 23andMe Experience

What will my archived reports look like?

The Reports Archive is a place to access the health-related reports available in your account prior to the transition of your account. Updated versions of ancestry-related features will be accessible in the new website experience and are not included in the archive.

The Archived Reports Summary is a single, printable PDF report that includes a summary of all of your health and traits results.

Selecting All Archived Reports will download a .zip file with all of your reports as individual, printable PDF reports. Due to the size of the file, this option is not recommended for mobile or tablet devices.

Your Reports Archive will only include the health reports for your profile – people with whom you are sharing results will not be included in your Reports Archive.

Your existing sharing connections will be maintained in the new 23andMe experience. This means that if you are sharing with a user before your account is transitioned, you will still be sharing with the same user after your account is transitioned. If both you and your sharing connection are on the new 23andMe experience, you can use the Share and Compare tool to view each other’s new experience reports. Keep in mind that the reports visible to your sharing connections depend on:

  • The reports available to you in the new experience.
  • The established sharing level.

If your sharing connection is on a different 23andMe site experience from you, the reports that may be viewed by that connection may be limited.

 

Additional Information

Customers who purchased a kit prior to November 22, 2013 and had access to health-related reports will have access to all of our interactive ancestry reports in our new experience, however their health-related reports will be available in an archived PDF format only (located in the Reports Archive).

While you will maintain access to your existing health-related reports, 23andMe cannot return any additional or new reports to you at this time. As we work with regulatory bodies in each region, it is possible that additional reports or products may be available in the future; additional charges for new products or reports may apply. It is important to note that regulatory bodies in some regions may have requirements that prohibit or fundamentally change specific reports or products.
